1. FBI FOILS ATTACK AT AMERICAN MILITARY BASE

The fact that three of the six men involved in this terrorist plot are Albanian illegal immigrants is a reminder of the huge security risks brought by illegal immigration. Given the huge number of illegals living in the UK, it is only a matter of time before a similar attack will take place in UK.

Six foreign-born Muslims were arrested and accused Tuesday of plotting to attack the Army's Fort Dix and massacre scores of U.S. soldiers, a plot the FBI says was foiled when the men took a video of themselves firing assault weapons to a store to have the footage put onto a DVD. The plot to attack U.S. soldiers ended in darkness at a home in Cherry Hill, N.J., reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr. Ringleaders of a homegrown terror cell with big plans and big mouths were arrested as they tried to buy AK-47 and M-16 assault weapons from an FBI agent posing as an arms dealer. Federal agents watched and listened to the six suspects for more than a year, adds Orr. The defendants, all men in their 20s from the former Yugoslavia and the Middle East, include a pizza deliveryman suspected of using his job to scout out the military base. ‘Today we dodged a bullet. In fact, when you look at the type of weapons that this group was trying to purchase, we may have dodged a lot of bullets,’ said FBI agent J.P. Weiss. ‘We had a group that was forming a platoon to take on an army.

They identified their target, they did their reconnaissance. They had maps. And they were in the process of buying weapons. Luckily, we were able to stop that.’ Three of the men are illegal aliens; the others are legal permanent residents, and one is a U.S. citizen, CBS News reports. Four of the men were born in the former Yugoslavia, one was born in Jordan and one came from Turkey, authorities said. All had lived in the United States for years. At the time of the arrests, the plot was in the planning stages and no attack was imminent, CBS News has learned. Officials said this is more of a ‘homegrown’ plot with no ties to al Qaeda or any other international terrorist organization. Their goal was ‘to kill as many American soldiers as possible’ in attacks with mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and guns, prosecutors said.

Investigators said they infiltrated the group with an informant well over a year ago and bided their time while they secretly recorded the defendants, five of whom lived in Cherry Hill, a Philadelphia suburb about 20 miles from Fort Dix. ‘This is what law enforcement is supposed to do in the post-9/11 era — stay one step ahead of those who are attempting to cause harm to innocent American citizens,’ U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie said. In the wake of 9/11, more than 400,000 names have come under one form of government surveillance or another, from watch lists to wiretaps, reports CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian. But only a handful of terrorists have been convicted in cases with concrete ties to al Qaeda, most notably ‘shoe bomber’ Richard Reid and Iyman Faris, sent to bring down the Brooklyn Bridge. Weiss saluted the unidentified New Jersey store clerk who noticed the suspicious video as the ‘unsung hero’ of the case. ‘That's why we're here today — because of the courage and heroism of that individual,’ the FBI agent said. In addition to plotting the attack on Fort Dix, the defendants spoke of attacking a Navy installation in Philadelphia during the annual Army-Navy football game, and conducted surveillance at other military installations in the region, prosecutors said.

One defendant, Eljvir Duka, was recorded as saying: ‘In the end, when it comes to defending your religion, when someone is trying attacks your religion, your way of life, then you go jihad.’ The six appeared in federal court Tuesday in Camden and were ordered held without bail for a hearing Friday. Five were charged with conspiracy to kill U.S. military personnel; the sixth was charged with aiding and abetting illegal immigrants in obtaining weapons. One defendant, Mohamad Ibrahim Shnewer, spoke of using rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons to kill at least 100 soldiers, according to court documents. ‘My intent is to hit a heavy concentration of soldiers,’ he was quoted as saying. ‘You hit four, five or six Humvees and light the whole place (up) and retreat completely without any losses.’ ‘It doesn't matter to me whether I get locked up, arrested or get taken away,’ another defendant, Serdar Tatar, was alleged to have said. ‘Or I die, it doesn't matter. I'm doing it in the name of Allah.’ The men trained by playing paintball in the woods in New Jersey and taking target practice at a firing range in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, where they had rented a house, authorities said.

They often watched terror training videos, clips featuring Osama bin Laden, a tape containing the last will and testament of some of the Sept. 11 hijackers, and tapes of armed attacks on U.S. military personnel, erupting in laughter when one plotter noted that a Marine's arm was blown off in an ambush, authorities said. Asked if those arrested had any links to al Qaeda, White House spokesman Tony Snow said it appears ‘there is no direct evidence of a foreign terrorist tie.’ In court documents, prosecutors said the suspects came to the attention of authorities in January 2006 when a Mount Laurel, N.J., shopkeeper alerted the FBI about a ‘disturbing’ video he had been asked to copy onto a DVD. The video showed 10 young men in their early 20s ‘shooting assault weapons at a firing range ... while calling for jihad and shouting in Arabic 'Allah Akbar' (God is great),’ the complaint said. The 10 included the six men who were arrested, authorities said. By March 2006, the group had been infiltrated by an informant who developed a relationship with Shnewer, and the informant secretly recorded meetings last August, according to court documents. One of the suspects, Tatar, worked at his father's pizzeria and made deliveries to the base, using that opportunity to scout out Fort Dix for an attack, authorities said. ‘Clearly, one of the guys had an intimate knowledge of the base from having been there delivering pizzas,’ Christie said. The men also allegedly conducted surveillance at other area military installations, including Fort Monmouth in New Jersey, Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, and a Philadelphia Coast Guard station. Besides Shnewer, Tatar and Duka, the other three men were identified in court papers as Dritan Duka, Shain Duka and Agron Abdullahu.

Fort Dix is used to train soldiers, particularly reservists. It also housed refugees from Kosovo in 1999. The description of the suspects as ‘Islamic militants’ caused renewed worry among New Jersey's Muslim community. Hundreds of Muslim men from New Jersey were rounded up and detained in the months after the Sept. 11 attacks, but none were connected to that plot. ‘If these people did something, then they deserve to be punished to the fullest extent of the law,’ said Sohail Mohammed, a lawyer who represented scores of detainees after the 2001 attacks. ‘But when the government says 'Islamic militants,' it sends a message to the public that Islam and militancy are synonymous.’ ‘Don't equate actions with religion,’ he said

Up to 4,000 terrorism suspects and their supporters are active in Britain, the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Stevens said yesterday. Lord Stevens said the security service MI5 had recently suggested a figure of 2,000 but the true number was ‘probably nearer 4,000’. Police and MI5 were ‘still too underfunded and undermanned to cope with the task they face in the decades to come. And that's how long this will last,’ he said. The ‘infection’ had spread out from ‘hot spots’ such as Luton, the West Midlands and Finsbury Park in London and those involved in the fertiliser bomb plot case which finished this week were ‘ordinary and British’. Lord Stevens also gave warning that al-Qa'eda-linked extremists were already trying to infiltrate the police and the security services and that dozens had already been weeded out. He urged that known terrorism suspects and ‘hate clerics’, such as Abu Hamza and Abu Qatada, should be deported, adding: ‘Our human rights come first.

Yet, incredibly, our so-called Human Rights laws, and our enviable history of religious tolerance, mean that foreigners preaching death and destruction to our way of life are allowed to stay here because their own countries won't tolerate such evil.’ In his column in The News of the World, after five terrorists were jailed for life in the fertiliser bomb case - which began as Operation Crevice for Scotland Yard when he was still Commissioner - Lord Stevens called for an independent Parliamentary committee ‘to publicly oversee the security services’. This task is currently carried out by the Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC), which reports to the Prime Minister. Police and security services, he added, had ‘nothing to hide. But it's vital the public know that’. There is controversy over how MI5 handled intelligence over links between the fertiliser gang and Mohammed Sidique Khan, the ringleader of the July 7 bombers. It was claimed yesterday that al-Qa'eda extremists, including Khan, held a ‘summit’ in London four years ago, at a barbecue, and plotted activity in Britain.

The claims in The Sunday Times are attributed to Hassan Butt, a one-time radical now said to have turned his back on fundamentalist violence, Butt - a former spokesman for the now defunct al-Muhajiroun extremist group founded by Omar Bakri Mohammed - claimed the barbecue took place in late April 2003, after the invasion of Iraq and that he also met Mohammed Junaid Babar, an American jihadist who was the principal ‘supergrass’ witness for the Crown in the fertiliser case at the Old Bailey. It emerged in the trial that Khan, Babar and members of the fertiliser gang had attended a training camp in the Afghan border region in July 2003. It has also emerged that anti-terrorism police made inquiries around five months before the July 2005 bombings into two cars which were shown to be linked to Khan. The checks were carried out by Scotland Yard detectives as part of the preparation of the fertiliser case. Khan's own Honda and a courtesy car loaned to him by a garage cropped up during a surveillance operation in February and March 2004.

Muslim and Christian leaders in Oslo scrapped a football match meant to foster understanding between religions on Saturday after the imams refused to play a team that included women priests. The imams said physical contact with women would be inappropriate, NRK public television said, and the Norwegian Christians refused a proposal of a male-only clash. The match was to have followed talks meant to build bridges between faiths in Norway. ‘Some say that bodily contact is the problem. It leads to special feelings that can lead to something forbidden,’ imam Senaid Kobilica told NRK public television in explanation. A woman priest from Norway's Lutheran state church, who was part of the Christian team, said that barring women from the pitch would be discrimination. ‘It's disappointing because it means deciding to sacrifice someone from one's own side -- women, who historically are those who have had to give way,’ priest Kjersti Oestland Tveit said. ‘It's a setback for sexual equality in 2007.’ Her objection prompted the Christian captain to cancel the match. ‘There are both men and women priests in Oslo, and you can't have a dialogue in which everyone can take part and then have a game where only men are allowed,’ Trond Bakkevig said.

4. CHASTITY RING CENTRE OF NEW SCHOOL RELIGION ROW

A Christian teenager will go to the high court this summer to challenge the decision of her school to ban her from wearing a celibacy ring on the grounds that it is her basic human right to express her religious beliefs. Lydia Playfoot, 16, will argue that the school is being discriminatory because it allows pupils from other faiths to wear religious adornments. Muslim and Sikh pupils at her all-girls secondary school in West Sussex are allowed to wear headscarves, trousers and kara bracelets.

The case of the teenager, who attends Millais school in Horsham, has the support of the Lawyers Christian Fellowship - an organisation that represents 2,000 Christian lawyers from across the UK. Its public policy officer, Andrea Williams, said today: ‘This case is about Lydia's freedom of expression of her religious beliefs. It's about equality and about creating a level playing field as Muslim and Sikh pupils are allowed to manifest their faith through religious ornaments and she has been prohibited.’ The case is expected to go before the high court before the summer recess. The case has been in the legal pipeline for two years after Lydia was first banned from wearing the chastity ring, which has an inscription from the Bible, when she was 14. Her father, Philip Playfoot, a full-time minister at the non-denominational King's church in Horsham, and her mother, Heather, support their daughter's legal challenge. Today her mother told EducationGuardian.co.uk: ‘Lydia has been wearing the ring since she was 14 as part of her chastity commitment.’ She explained the ring was a symbol of her daughter's Christian belief to remain celibate until marriage and to remain faithful after marriage.

She said: ‘We have only ever asked of the school that there is a level playing field for children from all faiths and to treat Christians with respect.’ The case comes two months after the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) issued fresh school uniform guidelines. Although the Playfoot case pre-dates this guidance, it was published following the case of a 12-year-old Muslim schoolgirl who took her education authority to the high court after she was refused permission to wear the full veil, or niqab. The guidance was revised in March after the court upheld the decision of her school and Buckinghamshire county council. The guidance says that schools ‘should act reasonably in accommodating religious requirements,’ under human rights legislation. But it is also legally possible under the act to have a school uniform policy that ‘restricts the freedom of pupils to manifest their religion’ on the grounds of health and safety and the ‘protection of the rights and freedoms of others’. The ring is worn as part of an abstinence pledge that schoolchildren take when they sign up to the US-based Christian scheme the Silver Ring Thing, which is aimed at high school students.

5. CHRISTIANS OF PAKISTAN, CONVERT OR DIE!

Christians in Charsadda, a town in North-West Frontier Province in Pakistan, have been warned that if they do not convert to Islam by 17 May they will face ‘dire consequences and bomb explosions’, Christian Today has learned. The threats were made in a letter circulated last week to the town’s Christian population, according to the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance. They come as Pakistan’s National Assembly overwhelmingly rejected proposed amendments to the blasphemy laws, which were tabled by a minority representative Member of Parliament, Mr Bhandara. On 8 May, the Government led the movement in the National Assembly to defeat the reforms. Under the existing blasphemy laws, anyone convicted of blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammad faces life imprisonment or the death penalty, according to section 295C of the Pakistan Penal Code. Mr Bhandara, a Parsi, proposed a bill which would amend the penalty for blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammad to a five year prison sentence and a fine. He also proposed applying the law to other religions, not only Islam. His proposals were greeted with cries of ‘shame’ from Government and opposition benches and were rejected by the Parliamentary Affairs Minister as un-Islamic. ‘Islam is our religion and such bills hurt our feelings. This is not a secular state but the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,’ the Minister said according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide.

In a statement, APMA said: ‘Christians and other religious minorities are being roped into false cases under the blasphemy law. They are being murdered by zealots … This law is proving to be a sword hanging on the heads of non-Muslims and secular-minded people. ‘The blasphemy law needs to be amended, if not altogether repealed, because of its great misuse. The law has created an atmosphere of bigotry and intolerance …a sense of insecurity and harassment.’ Commenting on the threats made to Christians in North-West Frontier Province, APMA said: ‘The Christians of Pakistan are already facing victimisation and discrimination. Many innocent Christians are incarcerated and killed. ‘Attacks on churches, Christian schools and other institutions have been experienced by the Christians of Pakistan in the past few years, and now the rise of vigilante groups and threats have aggravated the situation.’ Stuart Windsor, Christian Solidarity Worldwide’s National Director, said: ‘We are deeply concerned about the rise of extremism in Pakistan, and the threats made to Christians in North-West Frontier Province. ‘We urge the Pakistani authorities to do everything possible to create an atmosphere of religious tolerance and freedom and to protect religious minorities who are facing threats and ultimatums. We urge the Government of Pakistan to recognise the gross misuse of the blasphemy laws and the urgent need for their reform, or repeal.’

6. IF EUROPE SUCCUMBS TO JIHAD, AMERICA HAS NO CHANCE

Over the last two years Gates of Vienna has gradually become more Eurocentric than would be expected of an average American blog. A certain well-known lefty blog — I won’t stoop to name or link it here — has referred to us as ‘the Eurotrash version of LGF’. And with good reason. Who could disagree? ... Fjordman and I agree that if Europe succumbs to the Jihad, then America won’t stand a chance — if they go down, we go down. We will last longer, but we will face the same fate. The European crisis stands before us to warn America of what is to come.

Our biggest problem isn’t that a crazed horde of mujahideen might have access to French nukes or British military hardware — although that most definitely is an issue for our national security. The real problem is that American political culture is not vastly different from its European counterpart. Their response to the Islamofascist crisis — dhimmitude, collapse, civil war, or a reawakened sense of national purpose — is likely to prefigure our own.

In Fjordman’s opinion, Sweden is more of a basket case than any other European country. Caught in a self-destructive spiral of immigration, high taxation, welfare spending, and denial, it faces a looming catastrophe. ‘Paul Weston wrote on your blog that Europe will face a civil war by the year 2025,’ he said, ‘but I think he underestimates how soon it will be. Within five to ten years at the most Swedish society will collapse. It can’t be avoided; the Swedish welfare state is simply unsustainable. The general discussion that followed reached a consensus on the outline of future events in the UK:


1. The British government continues its suicidal policy of promoting Multiculturalism and cracking down on British ‘racists’.
2. A precipitating incident by an immigrant or group of immigrants sparks violence, with mobs of angry Britons taking the law into their own hands.
3. The riot police and possibly military troops are summoned by the government to quell the ‘racist hooligans.’
4. At this point a true civil war has begun, with the Government and civil authorities, in tacit alliance with the Islamists, fighting native Britons.
5. Elements of the police and the military are reluctant to fight against their own countrymen — with whom they are in broad agreement — and they defect to the ‘racist’ side of the conflict.
6. Next step…? Perhaps a full civil war? Fjordman and Gaia both felt that Britain will eventually come through the bloody conflict, and finally give up its self-destructive policies, after paying a huge price.
